Retinoids in Cosmetics — FDA Labeling Guidance: Retinol and its derivatives are permitted in cosmetics and have demonstrated efficacy in reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and improving skin texture through increased cell turnover.
SCCS Opinion on Retinol and Retinyl Acetate in Cosmetics: The SCCS advises that retinol concentrations above 0.3% in face creams and 0.05% in body lotions may cause increased photosensitivity. Products must include an instruction to use SPF protection and avoid use during pregnancy.

CTPA — Tocopherol (Vitamin E) in Cosmetics: Tocopherol and its esters are widely used antioxidants in cosmetic formulations. The CTPA confirms that tocopherol has an excellent safety profile in cosmetic applications and provides meaningful protection against oxidative degradation of skin lipids.
Methylparaben
Benefits
- ✓Effective preservative that prevents microbial contamination
Potential concerns
- !Weak estrogenic activity — potential endocrine disruption at high exposures
- !SCCS concluded safe at approved concentrations for most uses
Sources
SCCS Safety Opinion on Parabens — Methylparaben and Ethylparaben: The SCCS concluded that methylparaben is safe at a maximum concentration of 0.4% (as acid) in finished cosmetic products. The body of evidence does not support endocrine disruption concerns at these concentrations for the general population.
Korean MFDS Standards for Parabens in Cosmetics: Korean MFDS permits methylparaben at up to 0.4% in cosmetics and requires labelling disclosure. The MFDS advises that paraben safety data for infants under 36 months is insufficient and recommends caution.
